Some of the largest heritage oaks in Columbia line this corridor. Most of the calls we get here are about keeping them, not cutting them.
West Broadway runs from downtown out past Garth and West Boulevard toward Fairview, and the stretch through the historic district is one of the signature streetscapes in Columbia: deep setbacks, brick and stone homes from the 1910s through the 1940s, and an arching corridor of burr oaks, white oaks and pin oaks that were mature before most of the city existed.
Homeowners along West Broadway and the streets around it — Westmount, Bellevue, Aldeah, Anderson — generally do not call a tree service because they want a tree gone. They call because they have a two-hundred-year-old oak and they want to know what it needs. That is our favorite kind of call, and it is the kind that most tree services are not really set up to answer.
Preservation work leads here. ISA-certified arborist consulting — a real assessment of structure, decay, root condition and risk — is usually the right first step on a heritage tree, before anybody puts a saw in it. From there the work is typically structural pruning, deadwood removal, and end-weight reduction on the long horizontal limbs that old open-grown oaks develop.
Where a major limb or a co-dominant union is a genuine failure risk but the tree is otherwise sound, cabling and bracing can add decades of safe life — a steel or synthetic support system that limits how far a limb can move in wind. And when a heritage tree truly is finished, our tree removal crews take it down carefully, in pieces, around the house and the landscaping that grew up under it.
Storm damage does not wait for business hours. We are available 24/7 for emergency tree service and storm cleanup in West Broadway and across Columbia — call (573) 242-5335 any time, day or night.
The old oaks along West Broadway face a specific set of problems. Root zone compaction and grade change from a century of driveways, sidewalks and additions is the slow killer — an oak that looks fine can be in decline for twenty years before the canopy shows it. Long, heavy horizontal limbs on open-grown burr oaks accumulate end weight and fail in ice. And sidewalk and curb conflict raises the question of root cutting, which is the fastest way to destabilize a big tree.
We also see oak decline and hypoxylon on stressed trees, and anthracnose on the sycamores. None of those automatically mean removal. What they mean is that the tree needs somebody who can read it — which is exactly what an ISA certification is for.
Columbia is a Tree City USA community and takes its street trees seriously. Along West Broadway, many of the largest trees stand in or near the public right-of-way, where the City — not the property owner — has jurisdiction over pruning and removal. Trees behind the right-of-way line are yours.
Before we quote anything on this corridor, we will tell you which side of that line the tree is on. If it is the City’s, we will say so and you can call them. We would rather give you a straight answer for free than sell you work on a tree that is not yours.
We do not quote tree work over the internet, because no two trees are the same job. What it costs depends on the size and species, how close the tree is to your house or the power drop, what the access looks like, how much cleanup is involved, and whether you want the stump ground out. What does not change is how we work: a free on-site consultation, a written contract that spells out scope, cost and timing before anything starts, and a crew that leaves your West Broadway property cleaner than they found it. Call (573) 242-5335 or send the form.
West Broadway is one of ten Columbia neighborhoods we cover in detail. We work throughout The Grasslands, Downtown Columbia and East Campus as well, along with the rest of the city and the surrounding Boone County towns. If you want to know what your trees are likely up against before you call, our tree care guide and our piece on emerald ash borer in Missouri cover the problems we see most in mid-Missouri yards.
