Everything here was planted at once, twenty-five years ago. Now it is all hitting the same problems at the same time — starting with the Bradford pears.
Thornbrook is the large southwest Columbia subdivision off Scott Boulevard south of Chapel Hill Road, built out through the 1990s and 2000s. Like most neighborhoods of that generation, the lots were cleared and then landscaped, so nearly every tree in Thornbrook was planted rather than preserved — and nearly all of them went in within a few years of each other.
That creates a distinctive situation. A neighborhood where all the trees are the same age reaches every milestone together. Twenty-five years on, Thornbrook’s planted trees are simultaneously big enough to matter, close enough to the houses to be a problem, and old enough that the species chosen for fast growth are starting to show why that was a mistake.
Tree trimming and structural pruning is the highest-value work in Thornbrook right now. A maple or oak at twenty-five years is still young enough that correcting a co-dominant stem or reducing a bad union costs very little and prevents a much larger problem at forty. This is the window where good pruning pays for itself several times over.
Tree removal here is mostly failing ornamental pears and dead ash, usually in a front yard or between houses, plus stump grinding so you can replant something better. We also do a lot of clearance work — getting limbs off rooflines and out of driveways as landscape trees planted eight feet from the foundation reach the size they were always going to reach.
Storm damage does not wait for business hours. We are available 24/7 for emergency tree service and storm cleanup in Thornbrook and across Columbia — call (573) 242-5335 any time, day or night.
Callery and Bradford pear failure is the headline. They were planted everywhere in subdivisions of this era because they grow fast and flower early, and they have a structural flaw: dozens of branches emerging from nearly the same point on the trunk, with included bark and no real attachment. Around twenty to twenty-five years old they start splitting apart in wind and ice, usually right down the middle. If you have one, it is a matter of when.
Emerald ash borer has hit the ash that were planted alongside them. We also see co-dominant stems on the red and silver maples, pin oak chlorosis from mid-Missouri’s alkaline soil, and girdling roots on trees that were planted too deep or left in their nursery wire. Our arborist consultations can identify which of these your trees have while there is still time to correct them.
There is a specific point in a planted tree’s life where a small amount of correct pruning changes its entire future, and Thornbrook is sitting in it. Correcting a co-dominant stem on a twenty-five-year-old maple is an hour of work. Dealing with the same tree after it splits at forty is a removal, a stump, and possibly a roof.
If you have not had your trees looked at, this is the year to do it. Free assessment, no obligation, and we will tell you plainly if the answer is that they are fine. Call (573) 242-5335.
We do not quote tree work over the internet, because no two trees are the same job. What it costs depends on the size and species, how close the tree is to your house or the power drop, what the access looks like, how much cleanup is involved, and whether you want the stump ground out. What does not change is how we work: a free on-site consultation, a written contract that spells out scope, cost and timing before anything starts, and a crew that leaves your Thornbrook property cleaner than they found it. Call (573) 242-5335 or send the form.
Thornbrook is one of ten Columbia neighborhoods we cover in detail. We work throughout Rock Bridge, Southridge and Old Hawthorne as well, along with the rest of the city and the surrounding Boone County towns. If you want to know what your trees are likely up against before you call, our tree care guide and our piece on emerald ash borer in Missouri cover the problems we see most in mid-Missouri yards.
