Ranch homes from the 1960s under silver maples planted the same year. Those trees are now at the end of their safe life, all at once.
Southridge covers the established south Columbia neighborhoods off Providence Road below Stadium and around Nifong — brick and frame ranch homes built largely through the 1960s and 1970s, on comfortable lots with big front-yard shade trees. It is one of the most settled parts of the city, and the canopy shows it.
The trees that went in when these houses were new are now fifty and sixty years old. For an oak that is early middle age. For the silver maples that were planted by the thousand in that era because they grow fast and shade quickly, it is closing time — and that is most of what brings us into Southridge.
Tree removal of declining silver maples is our most common Southridge job, and it is almost always over a house, a driveway, or a power drop rather than in open yard. Our crews take these apart from the top and rig the wood down instead of felling it. Stump grinding follows — and silver maple stumps are large, so getting them below grade properly matters if you want the yard back.
On the trees still worth keeping, tree trimming and deadwood removal buys real time. A maple with sound wood and one bad limb does not need to come down; it needs the limb reduced and the deadwood out. Our ISA-certified arborists draw that line honestly — we would rather prune a tree for you three times over ten years than sell you one removal you did not need.
Storm damage does not wait for business hours. We are available 24/7 for emergency tree service and storm cleanup in Southridge and across Columbia — call (573) 242-5335 any time, day or night.
Overmature silver maple is the defining Southridge issue. They were the go-to shade tree of the 1960s subdivision because they grow fast, and the trade-off is soft, weak wood, shallow aggressive roots, a habit of forming included-bark unions, and a safe useful life of roughly fifty to seventy years. At the age Southridge’s maples are now, decay is common and limb failure is routine.
Alongside that we see pin oak chlorosis from alkaline soil, surface root and sidewalk conflict from those shallow maple roots, and emerald ash borer damage on the ash planted in the same era. What you want to know is which of your trees have a decade left and which have a season, and that takes somebody looking at the union and the base, not just the canopy.
A few things to look for on your own before you call anybody. A vertical seam where two trunks meet, with bark turned inward, is an included-bark union and it is the most common failure point. Mushrooms or conks at the base or on the trunk mean internal decay. A limb with no leaves in midsummer is dead and will come down eventually. Bark falling off in plates on a living tree is a bad sign.
Any one of those is worth an assessment. We will come out, look at the tree properly, and tell you what we actually see — free, and with no pressure to do anything about it today. Call (573) 242-5335.
We do not quote tree work over the internet, because no two trees are the same job. What it costs depends on the size and species, how close the tree is to your house or the power drop, what the access looks like, how much cleanup is involved, and whether you want the stump ground out. What does not change is how we work: a free on-site consultation, a written contract that spells out scope, cost and timing before anything starts, and a crew that leaves your Southridge property cleaner than they found it. Call (573) 242-5335 or send the form.
Southridge is one of ten Columbia neighborhoods we cover in detail. We work throughout The Grasslands, Rock Bridge and Thornbrook as well, along with the rest of the city and the surrounding Boone County towns. If you want to know what your trees are likely up against before you call, our tree care guide and our piece on emerald ash borer in Missouri cover the problems we see most in mid-Missouri yards.
