Ridge-and-valley acreage southeast of town. Big native timber, long driveways, and trees that are a long way from anywhere a truck can park.
The Bearfield area runs southeast of Columbia along Bearfield Road and the Rock Quarry Road corridor, down toward the Gans Creek and Little Bonne Femme drainages. Lots here tend to be larger — several acres is common — with houses set well back on wooded ridges above steep, timbered draws.
It is some of the prettiest property in Boone County and some of the most demanding tree work in it. The timber is native oak, hickory, walnut and sycamore, much of it never managed. Terrain is the constant factor: what would be a routine removal on a flat suburban lot becomes a rigging and wood-handling problem when the tree is on a forty-degree slope two hundred feet below the driveway.
Tree removal on Bearfield acreage usually means hazard trees near the house, the driveway, or an outbuilding — dead standing timber, storm-damaged trees hung up in their neighbors, and leaners over structures. Our crews are set up for the access problems that come with it.
Land clearing is heavy work out here: opening building sites, clearing pasture and fence lines, cutting driveways in, and reclaiming ground that has grown up in cedar and honeysuckle. We follow with stump grinding and complete brush removal. Because we are cutting a lot of hardwood out here anyway, we also sell the seasoned firewood and deliver the bulk mulch it becomes.
Storm damage does not wait for business hours. We are available 24/7 for emergency tree service and storm cleanup in Bearfield and across Columbia — call (573) 242-5335 any time, day or night.
Steep-slope failures are the recurring issue. Trees on the sides of these draws are rooted in thin soil on grade, and saturated ground after a heavy rain plus a wind event will lay them over. If a slope tree is leaning toward your house or driveway, that lean is information.
We also see a lot of storm-hung timber — trees broken and lodged in the canopy of another tree, which is the single most dangerous condition in tree work and absolutely not a do-it-yourself job. Plus dead ash from emerald ash borer throughout the native timber, and cedar encroachment on old pasture. Our ISA-certified arborists can walk the property and prioritize what actually needs attention.
On a five-acre wooded lot, "which trees are a problem?" is a real question and not an obvious one. We do property walk-throughs on Bearfield acreage: we look at the trees within striking distance of the house, the outbuildings, the driveway and the power drop, and give you a written, prioritized list rather than a single number.
That way you can take care of the genuine hazards now and plan the rest. Free, no obligation — call (573) 242-5335.
We do not quote tree work over the internet, because no two trees are the same job. What it costs depends on the size and species, how close the tree is to your house or the power drop, what the access looks like, how much cleanup is involved, and whether you want the stump ground out. What does not change is how we work: a free on-site consultation, a written contract that spells out scope, cost and timing before anything starts, and a crew that leaves your Bearfield property cleaner than they found it. Call (573) 242-5335 or send the form.
Bearfield is one of ten Columbia neighborhoods we cover in detail. We work throughout Rock Bridge, Old Hawthorne and Southridge as well, along with the rest of the city and the surrounding Boone County towns. If you want to know what your trees are likely up against before you call, our tree care guide and our piece on emerald ash borer in Missouri cover the problems we see most in mid-Missouri yards.
